Dr. Renel Brooks-Moon
Renel is a Bay Area native, born in Oakland, California. She is a graduate of Woodside High School, and received a B.A. in English Literature in 1981. Her radio career included stints at 106 KMEL, “The Morning Zoo”, and the “Renel in the Morning Show” on 98.1 KISS-FM.
Her first foray into sports broadcasting came with the Oakland A’s in the late 80s and early 90’s as host of “A’s Inside Pitch”, covering the Oakland Athletics teams under managers Tony LaRussa, Art Howe and Bob Geren. In 2000, Renel was honored to be named Public Address Announcer for the San Francisco Giants. Renel was thrilled to be on the microphone for the Giants 3 World Series championships, she had a car in all three parades, and hosted all three post parade rallies at City Hall.
Renel completed her 24th and final season at Oracle Park in 2023.
Renel has been recognized by the Baseball Hall of Fame as the first woman to Public Address Announce a world championship game in any professional sport, following Game 3 of the 2002 World Series. Renel has received numerous awards, including honors from American Women in Radio and Television, Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame, 100 Black Women of the Bay and the Junior Giants Hall of Fame, to name just a few.
In 2008, Renel received an honorary doctorate from her Alma Mater, Mills College, and in 2018 she received an honorary doctorate from the University of San Francisco, and delivered the commencement address. In 2017, Renel was honored to MC the historic inauguration of San Francisco’s first African-American Female Mayor, London Breed.
As PA Announcer, Renel also hosted “G-Mag” on NBC Sports Bay Area, and won an Emmy Award as host of the television series “Forever Giants”. Renel is also featured on a limited edition 2020 TOPPS baseball card. In May 2024, Renel was honored on the State Senate floor in Sacramento, by Senate President Pro Tempore, Mike McGuire, and named “Woman of the Year” by Assemblyman Matt Haney in recognition of her trailblazing broadcasting career and commitment to social justice. Renel was inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, re orient of the Mensch Award.
Renel was named San Francisco Giants PAA Emerita in 2024.
