BROWNIE SIMS
Hello, my name is Brownie Sims. I started my journey in this field when I was 16 years old. I knew from the beginning what I wanted to be, setting goals high and design a plan to get there. I started my training in cosmetology school three days after graduating from high school. I stayed focused and determined to excel at every challenge. My drive and excellence to be the best student resulted in me participating in hair styling competitions. My mentor Barbara Edmonds provided hands-on training that included masters in the industry – Thomas Hayden, Olive Benson & Yosh. This exposure prepared me for the hair Olympics. |
I was hired to work on my first movie while still in school with the elegant actress Lynn Whitfield and phenomenal actor/director/producer Bill Duke. These experiences opened my world to opportunities and possibilities outside of working behind the chair. I begin to set my sights on not only owning my salon but also becoming a celebrity stylist. In four years, I opened my first salon. I was travelling the world with comedian Sinbad, actress/choreographer/director Debbie Allen, artists Luther Vandross and Prince.
A significant turning point in my career happened at the age of 30. I became a Mom and decided to redefine myself. I still loved being a part of the hair industry so I pursued a different approach by turning to education. It was my desire to give back what was giving to me so I started teaching technique at trade shows, creating educational videos, bootcamps and books. This journey took me to Design Essential. I’ve been with Design Essential for a total of eighteen years, five of those years as a color manager educating other stylists all over the country and overseas doing what I love.
October 2013 I launch my own technical education program called “The Experience Bootcamp”, a simplistic approach to advance education – allowing color to tell a story. In October 2014, “The Experience Bootcamp” at sea sailed to the Bahamas. The trip was designed as four days of training and preparing our minds to take back our industry with technique. We sail again in October 2015 “The Experience – Bootcamp at Sea – travelling to four islands & this year we will be traveling to Costa Rica.
My Motto -We Are Better Than Good – Better Than Most – Better Than the Rest
